Wives of Missing Ebonyi Engineers Protest at Works Ministry

Wives of five engineers abducted in Ebonyi State staged a protest on Monday at the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja, demanding urgent action to secure the release of their husbands.

The engineers, employees of NELAN Construction Limited, were reportedly abducted by armed men in November 2021 while working on the Abakaliki Ring Road project in the state.

Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the protesting women called on the Federal Government of Nigeria and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and ensure their safe return.

The protesters lamented that nearly four years after the incident, there has been little progress in securing the release of the engineers. They said the prolonged absence of their husbands has caused severe emotional and financial hardship for their families.

Some of the women appealed directly to authorities at the ministry to intervene and prioritise the case, stressing that the engineers were working on a government-backed infrastructure project when they were abducted.

The demonstrators urged the government to strengthen security for workers on major infrastructure projects across the country and ensure that contractors and employees are adequately protected.

Officials at the ministry acknowledged the protest and assured the women that their concerns would be communicated to relevant authorities as efforts continue to address the situation. 🚧🇳🇬
