Ex-Super Eagles Star Henry Nwosu Dies At 62

Former Henry Nwosu, a midfielder of the Nigeria national football team and a member of the squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations, has died at the age of 62.

His death was confirmed by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami, who paid tribute to the late football legend.

Nwosu reportedly died in Lagos after battling health challenges in recent years. Born on June 14, 1963, in Imo State, he was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that lifted the 1980 AFCON title, a historic achievement that marked the country’s first continental triumph.

During his international career between 1980 and 1991, Nwosu earned dozens of caps for the Super Eagles and scored several goals, becoming one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.

At club level, he played for teams including New Nigeria Bank FC, African Continental Bank FC, ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast and RC Bafoussam of Cameroon.

After retiring from active football, Nwosu moved into coaching and worked with several Nigerian clubs. He also served in the national team coaching setup and was part of the technical crew during Nigeria’s silver-medal finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Tributes have continued to pour in from former players, football officials and fans, who remember him as one of the most talented midfielders of Nigeria’s golden football era.
