Lassa Fever: NCDC, NMA Issue Emergency Alert To Doctors Over Rising Cases
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have issued a joint advisory to healthcare professionals nationwide, warning of a rise in Lassa fever cases.
The alert urges doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to maintain heightened vigilance and strictly adhere to infection prevention and control measures to curb the spread of the viral disease.
Authorities highlighted that Lassa fever, a highly infectious viral haemorrhagic illness, has seen increased transmission in several states, making early detection and prompt medical response critical.
The advisory recommends proper use of personal protective equipment, timely reporting of suspected cases, and adherence to protocols for managing Lassa fever patients in hospitals and clinics.
NCDC and NMA officials stressed the importance of community awareness and engagement, encouraging the public to follow hygiene practices and avoid contact with rodents, which are known carriers of the virus.
Healthcare workers have been urged to ensure rapid isolation and treatment of confirmed cases to reduce morbidity and prevent further outbreaks across the country.
