FG Vows Crackdown on Foreigners Overstaying Visas
Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced plans to intensify action against foreigners who overstay their visas, stating that new technology now enables authorities to track and apprehend violators more effectively.
The government said upgraded systems and integrated data platforms have strengthened the capacity of the Nigeria Immigration Service to monitor visa compliance in real time. Newly established operations and data coordination centers are expected to improve identification of individuals who fail to exit the country within the approved duration of stay.
Officials explained that the initiative is part of broader immigration reforms aimed at enhancing national security, improving border management, and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s immigration laws.
Under existing regulations, visa overstayers may face penalties including fines, deportation, and possible entry bans, depending on the duration of the violation.
The Federal Government emphasized that the new enforcement measures are not targeted at discouraging legitimate visitors or investors but are intended to promote lawful migration and strengthen internal security.
Authorities urged foreign nationals residing in Nigeria to ensure their documentation remains valid and to regularize their status where necessary to avoid sanctions.
