Fire Guts Exams and Records Building at Federal College of Education, Enugu

A mysterious fire has destroyed the Exams and Records building at the Federal College of Education, Enugu, raising concerns and sparking allegations of possible sabotage amid ongoing administrative and financial probes at the institution.

The fire, which reportedly broke out late at night, razed offices housing critical academic documents, including students’ records, examination files, and administrative materials. Firefighters were said to have battled for hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining structures within the campus.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke billowed from the building before emergency responders arrived. Although no casualties have been reported, the destruction of sensitive documents has heightened anxiety among students and staff.

Management of the college confirmed the incident in a brief statement, assuring stakeholders that efforts were underway to assess the extent of the damage and recover salvageable materials. The institution also pledged to put measures in place to safeguard students’ academic records and ensure that academic activities continue with minimal disruption.

However, the incident has generated speculation within and outside the campus community. Some staff members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested that the fire could be linked to ongoing corruption investigations reportedly involving certain officials of the institution. They called for a thorough and transparent probe to determine the cause of the fire.

Security agencies have since commenced investigations to ascertain whether the incident was accidental or an act of arson. Officials have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims while inquiries are ongoing.

The development has drawn reactions from education stakeholders in Enugu State, who emphasized the need for improved safety infrastructure in public institutions, including functional fire alarms, surveillance systems, and proper document digitisation to prevent future losses.

As investigations continue, students and parents await further updates from the college authorities regarding the preservation of academic records and the restoration of normal operations.
