Okpebholo Joins Edo Residents to Protest Power Outages
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday joined hundreds of residents in a protest against persistent power outages and what they described as excessive billing by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The demonstrators gathered in Benin City, expressing frustration over prolonged blackouts affecting homes, businesses and public institutions across the state. Protesters carried placards demanding improved electricity supply and an end to what they termed “estimated and oppressive billing practices.”
Governor Okpebholo, addressing the crowd, said the state government would not remain silent while residents continue to endure erratic power supply and unfair charges. He assured citizens that the government would formally engage BEDC and relevant regulatory authorities to seek immediate improvements.
The governor emphasised that reliable electricity is critical for economic growth, small businesses and job creation, noting that the current situation has negatively impacted productivity and livelihoods.
Residents who spoke during the protest said they often receive high monthly bills despite experiencing little or no electricity for extended periods.
In response, BEDC officials said they were working to address technical challenges affecting supply and encouraged customers to report complaints through official channels.
The protest highlights growing concerns over electricity distribution challenges in Edo State and increasing public pressure for reforms in the power sector.
