25 Osun Assembly Members Defect from PDP to Accord Party

Twenty-five lawmakers in the Osun State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, in a major political shift within Osun State.

The legislators announced their defection on Monday during a plenary session, citing alignment with the political direction of Governor Ademola Adeleke and the need to consolidate governance efforts in the state.

According to the lawmakers, their decision followed consultations with party stakeholders and constituents, adding that the move was aimed at strengthening legislative–executive cooperation and ensuring policy continuity.

The mass defection significantly alters the composition of the Assembly, leaving only one member in the opposition and effectively giving the Accord Party overwhelming legislative dominance.

Political observers say the development could reshape party structures ahead of future elections in the state, while raising concerns among opposition figures about shrinking political diversity within the Assembly.

Neither the state chapter of the PDP nor national party leadership had issued an official response at the time of filing this report, though party insiders described the development as a “serious setback.”

Analysts note that defections remain a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape, often driven by strategic alliances, internal party disputes, and shifting power dynamics at the state level.
