ICPC Takes El-Rufai into Custody After EFCC Release

Former Nasir El‑Rufai was reportedly taken into custody by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) shortly after his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sources confirmed late Wednesday.

According to reports, El-Rufai had been detained by the EFCC in Abuja since Monday as part of an ongoing probe into allegations arising from his tenure as governor of Kaduna State. Following hours of questioning, the EFCC granted him bail, but operatives of the ICPC reportedly took him into fresh custody at the EFCC headquarters before he could leave.

An ICPC statement confirmed that El-Rufai was “in our custody … in connection with ongoing investigations,” although the anti-graft agency has not publicly specified the nature of its probe. Efforts to obtain a formal comment from the ICPC were unsuccessful.

El-Rufai’s lawyer neither confirmed nor denied the report when contacted, while ICPC spokesman John Odey was also unavailable for comment.

The dual custody developments underscore the intense scrutiny facing the former governor, who has been under investigation for alleged financial impropriety. Political observers note that the unfolding situation reflects the growing role of multiple federal investigative agencies in high-profile cases, adding further complexity to El-Rufai’s legal challenges.
