VIDEO: Student Takes Over as Lagos One-Day Governor

Miss Etiyemonu Esther, a brilliant secondary school student and winner of the 21st Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, was on Monday hosted as the One-Day Governor of Lagos State in a special ceremony at Lagos House, Marina.

In a video shared by Lagos State Government on social media, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formally welcomed Miss Esther and symbolically handed over gubernatorial duties to her for the day, celebrating her academic achievement and leadership potential.

Miss Etiyemonu, a student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, earned the coveted title after emerging as the overall champion in the spelling bee contest held in December 2025. Under the initiative — which aims to encourage academic excellence and youth engagement — winners are given a unique opportunity to experience state leadership firsthand.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised her dedication, confidence and focus, saying she “represents the very best of our youth,” and wished her continued success in her future endeavours.

Esther was accompanied by her One-Day Deputy Governor, Miss Awoyemi Dorcas, and One-Day Secretary to the State Government, Miss Salami Jumai Olaide, along with their parents.

The “One-Day Governor” programme, rooted in the state’s long-standing Spelling Bee Competition, is designed to nurture leadership, civic responsibility and public service values among young Nigerians.
