UK to Replace Physical Visa Documents with Digital eVisas from February 25, 2026

London — The United Kingdom will replace physical visa documents with a fully digital UK eVisa system starting February 25, 2026, in a major overhaul of its immigration and border control processes.

Under the new framework, travellers and migrants will no longer receive physical visa stickers or biometric residence permits (BRPs). Instead, immigration status will be stored electronically and linked to the holder’s passport through an online account managed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

The government says the transition is designed to modernize border operations, strengthen security, and reduce the risks associated with lost or fraudulent documents.

Digital-Only Immigration Status

With the introduction of eVisas, visa holders will access and prove their immigration status online. Airlines and border officials will verify permission to travel and enter the UK through digital checks rather than manual inspection of physical documents.

Authorities state that the system will provide real-time updates and more secure verification of visa conditions.

Implications for Travellers

For most passengers, border procedures are expected to remain similar, with passport scans playing a central role. However, physical visa evidence will no longer be required.

Travellers will need to ensure:

Their passport details are correctly linked to their UKVI account

Their digital visa status is accessible before travel

Personal information is kept up to date

Failure to maintain accurate records could result in delays or boarding issues.

Transition for Existing Visa Holders

Individuals currently holding physical immigration documents, including BRPs, will be required to switch to the digital system. The Home Office is expected to issue guidance and deadlines for updating records ahead of the rollout.

Immigration advisers warn that outdated passport information is likely to be one of the most common causes of travel disruption during the transition period.

Government’s Position

Officials describe the move as part of a broader digital transformation of public services. The Home Office argues that electronic records improve efficiency and offer greater protection against document loss and identity fraud.

The UK joins a growing number of countries adopting digital visa technologies to manage immigration systems.

Guidance for Visa Holders

Experts recommend that visa holders prepare by:

✔ Setting up and regularly checking their UKVI online account

✔ Updating passport and contact details promptly

✔ Confirming visa status before international journeys
