Trump Announces New U.S.–India Trade Deal, Claims India Will Halt Russian Oil Imports

Washington/New Delhi — U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced what he described as a major new trade agreement between the United States and India, saying the deal would significantly reduce tariffs on American goods and marking what he called a “historic shift” in India’s energy policy.

Speaking at a press briefing, Trump said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to halt imports of Russian oil, a move that, if implemented, would represent a significant change in India’s stance since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We’ve reached a tremendous trade deal with India,” Trump said. “Tariffs are coming down, American businesses are getting fair access, and India will no longer be buying Russian oil.”

According to Trump, the agreement includes tariff reductions on a range of U.S. exports, though detailed terms of the deal were not immediately released. The White House said further information would be provided following consultations between trade officials from both countries.

Indian officials have not yet publicly confirmed the specifics of the announcement. New Delhi has previously defended its purchase of discounted Russian oil as a matter of national interest, while also maintaining strong diplomatic and economic ties with the United States.

Analysts say a complete halt to Russian oil imports by India would have wide-ranging implications for global energy markets and geopolitics, given India’s position as one of Russia’s largest oil buyers.

The announcement comes as Trump continues to emphasize trade renegotiations and tougher positions on global energy flows as central pillars of his foreign and economic policy. Markets and international observers are expected to closely watch for official confirmation from India and the release of formal trade documents in the coming days.
