Tinubu Unveils $250m Intervention for Citizens Displaced by Floods

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a $250 million, 10-year intervention programme aimed at supporting Nigerians displaced by floods and other climate-related disasters across the country.

The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on Wednesday, is designed to restore livelihoods, rebuild affected communities and strengthen climate resilience in flood-prone areas. According to the Presidency, the programme will focus on housing reconstruction, livelihood support, critical infrastructure and long-term adaptation measures to reduce the impact of recurring floods.

President Tinubu said the intervention reflects the federal government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens as climate change continues to intensify extreme weather events. He noted that flooding has displaced thousands of Nigerians in recent years, destroying homes, farmlands and sources of income.

“This programme is about more than emergency relief,” Tinubu said. “It is about restoring dignity, rebuilding lives and ensuring that communities are better prepared for future climate shocks.”

The 10-year plan will be implemented in collaboration with relevant ministries, state governments, development partners and humanitarian agencies. Priority is expected to be given to communities that have suffered repeated displacement due to seasonal flooding.

Nigeria has experienced severe floods in recent years, with climate change, poor drainage systems and unregulated development worsening the impact. Government officials say the new intervention is part of a broader strategy to address climate risks while promoting sustainable development.

Further details on funding structure, beneficiary selection and implementation timelines are expected to be released by the appropriate agencies in the coming weeks.
