Affordable housing key to police welfare, says IGP
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has stressed that affordable housing is central to improving the welfare, morale and productivity of officers of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that decent accommodation remains a major factor in effective policing.
The IGP made this known while speaking on ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional partnerships aimed at addressing welfare challenges within the Force. According to him, access to safe and affordable housing would not only enhance the quality of life of police personnel and their families, but also boost professionalism and commitment to duty.
He explained that many officers operate under difficult conditions, with housing costs consuming a significant portion of their income, thereby affecting their well-being and performance. “When officers are properly housed, they are more motivated, focused and better positioned to serve the public,” the IGP said.
The police boss added that the Force is engaging relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector partners and developers, to explore sustainable housing solutions for officers across the country. He described such collaborations as critical to bridging existing gaps in police welfare.
Reaffirming his commitment to reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP noted that welfare initiatives, including housing, healthcare and insurance, remain a priority under his leadership. He emphasized that improved welfare would translate into enhanced security delivery and stronger public trust in the police.
He also called for continued support from federal and state governments, as well as well-meaning Nigerians, to ensure that police officers are adequately supported to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively.
