CAF Fines Algeria, Suspends Players After Post-Match Clash with Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down disciplinary sanctions against Algeria following a post-match altercation after their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) defeat to Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CAF confirmed it had imposed a $100,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) for misconduct and failure to control its players after the final whistle. The sanctions follow a brawl that broke out shortly after Nigeria’s victory, marring what had otherwise been a competitive encounter.

CAF also announced the suspension of two Algerian players, who were found guilty of violent conduct during the incident. The players will miss upcoming continental fixtures, with the exact length of their suspensions outlined in CAF’s disciplinary ruling.

According to CAF, its Disciplinary Board reviewed match officials’ reports, video footage, and submissions from both federations before reaching the decision. The governing body reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violence, stressing that players and officials must uphold the principles of fair play and respect.

“The sanctions are intended to send a strong message that unsporting behavior and post-match violence have no place in African football,” CAF said.

The Nigerian Football Federation was not sanctioned in relation to the incident, with CAF noting that responsibility for the misconduct lay with the Algerian side.

Nigeria’s victory over Algeria secured their progression in the tournament, while the disciplinary outcome adds further setback to Algeria’s AFCON campaign. CAF warned that repeat offenses could attract even harsher penalties in the future.
