Senator Natasha Breaks Silence After FG Withdraws Criminal Charges Against Her

ABUJA, Nigeria — Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has publicly reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the criminal defamation and related charges previously brought against her — a development she says reaffirms her faith in Nigeria’s legal system and democratic principles.

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on Thursday, struck out the case after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) filed a Notice of Discontinuance, formally ending the prosecution in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.

Reacting to the ruling, Akpoti-Uduaghan described the outcome as a vindication of her position and an affirmation of her belief in the rule of law. “Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” she said, expressing gratitude to her legal team, supporters, and constituents for their steadfast backing throughout the process.

The charges had stemmed from comments the senator allegedly made during a televised interview, attracting intense public debate around freedom of expression, political accountability, and the scope of prosecutorial powers in a democracy. Critics — including civil society groups and rights advocates — had condemned the prosecution as a potential infringement on democratic rights and free speech.

Presiding judge Justice C. N. Oji noted that the withdrawal and subsequent strike-out of the matter highlighted the need for restraint in the exercise of prosecutorial authority, hoping the ruling would encourage healing and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The dismissal of the case marks the end of a high-profile legal dispute that had drawn nationwide attention and underscored ongoing tensions over political expression and legal accountability in the country’s political landscape.
