CAF Opens Investigation After Algeria’s Complaint
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a misconduct investigation following a formal complaint submitted by Algeria over refereeing decisions in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) loss to Nigeria.
CAF confirmed that the complaint, lodged by the Algerian Football Federation, relates to alleged officiating errors during the match, which Algeria claims had a significant impact on the outcome. The continental football body said the investigation will review the match officials’ conduct in line with its disciplinary and refereeing regulations.
In a statement, CAF noted that it takes allegations concerning match officiating seriously and has commenced a thorough assessment, including a review of match reports, video footage, and officials’ submissions. The process will determine whether the referees adhered to established laws of the game and CAF protocols.
Algeria had expressed dissatisfaction with certain key decisions made during the encounter, describing them as contentious and calling for accountability. Nigeria, on the other hand, progressed from the fixture after securing victory on the pitch.
CAF emphasized that the investigation does not automatically imply wrongdoing and urged stakeholders to allow due process to take its course. The body added that any findings and possible sanctions, if applicable, would be communicated at the conclusion of the review.
The development has sparked debate among fans and analysts, once again placing refereeing standards at the center of discussions surrounding the ongoing AFCON tournament.
