BREAKING NEWS: FG, ASUU to Sign New Agreement January 14, Approve 40% Salary Increase
The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to sign a new agreement on January 14, with reports indicating approval of a 40 per cent salary increase for university lecturers.
Sources familiar with the negotiations disclosed that the agreement follows a series of closed-door meetings between representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and ASUU leadership, aimed at addressing lingering disputes over welfare and funding of public universities.
The proposed agreement is expected to cover improved remuneration, conditions of service and other outstanding demands raised by ASUU, which have previously led to prolonged industrial actions in the university system.
A senior government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the salary adjustment is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to stabilise the academic calendar and improve staff morale in federal universities.
ASUU officials have also hinted that the union would brief its members after the signing to determine the next line of action, including possible suspension of any planned industrial moves.
If implemented, the agreement could mark a significant turning point in government–union relations and bring relief to students who have often borne the brunt of repeated strikes in Nigeria’s public universities.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor ASUU has issued an official statement confirming the details of the agreement.
