The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major change to the scheduling of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), revealing that the tournament will now be held every four years.
The announcement was made on Saturday by CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, during a press conference following an executive committee meeting in Morocco, held on the eve of the 2025 AFCON.
According to Motsepe, the decision is part of broader reforms aimed at improving the quality, competitiveness, and commercial value of African football. As part of the restructuring, CAF also unveiled plans to introduce an African Nations League, a new competition expected to provide more regular and competitive matches for national teams across the continent.
Motsepe explained that the move would help reduce congestion in the football calendar, allow better preparation for major tournaments, and align African football more closely with global best practices.
AFCON has traditionally been held every two years, making it one of the most frequent continental tournaments in world football. The shift to a four-year cycle marks a historic change and is expected to spark wide reactions among football stakeholders, fans, and national associations.
CAF is expected to release further details on the implementation timeline and format of the proposed Nations League in the coming months
