2 min read

Ogun State’s Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport has officially received certification for commercial operations, marking a major milestone in the state’s aviation and economic development.

The certification came after an inspection by key aviation regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the agencies lauded the airport’s world-class infrastructure and its compliance with international standards.

Critical facilities such as the control tower, weather monitoring systems, runway, fire service stations, and apron were all found to meet the stringent requirements for safe air traffic operations.

The airport has been described as one of the best in West Africa, with regulators praising its cutting-edge design and operational capacity.

“There has been significant improvement in the facilities since my last visit. The infrastructure here is on par with any standard airport globally,” said Ango Mohammed, representing the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards at NCAA.

Tayo John, representing the Managing Director of NAMA, confirmed that the inspection focused on ensuring the airport’s readiness for safe and efficient air traffic services. “We have inspected the infrastructure, and they comply with the strict standards required for air traffic operations,” he said.

The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, located along the Ilisan-Iperu axis, is poised to become a key player in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially in air cargo and agricultural exports.

Nicolas Mfarrej, the Senior Project Manager at Craneburg, the construction firm overseeing the project, revealed that the airport is 98% complete, with the final assessment now paving the way for full commercial operations.

Captain Dapo Olumide, the Manager of Gateway International Airport, expressed confidence in the airport’s operational readiness, noting that the development reflects Ogun’s ambition to become a leader in the country’s air traffic services.

Engineer Ade Akinsanya, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, also praised the airport’s development, saying, “This final assessment confirms Ogun State’s readiness to take the lead in air traffic services in Nigeria. The dedication to achieving a world-class airport is evident.”
