Dangote Refinery Faces Backlash Over Fuel Pricing Secrecy

2 min read

Nigerians have expressed outrage over Dangote Refinery’s refusal to disclose the selling price of its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) following the commencement of fuel distribution earlier this year.

This controversy erupted after the Dangote Group denied claims by petroleum marketers that its petrol was being sold between N1,115 and N1,028 per litre.

Yakubu Suleiman, the National Assistant Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, stated in an Arise Television interview that the price of Dangote petrol exceeds that of its competitors.

However, the refinery has labeled these assertions as “fake news,” further complicating the situation.

Public sentiment on social media has turned against Dangote Refinery, with many users demanding a transparent pricing structure.

One user, @Olurunwababs, criticized the company, stating, “It is laughable to debunk a claim as fake, then refuse to disclose how much it is to buy from Dangote Refinery! What DR needs to do is tell us how much they sell fuel. That way, we will have a full picture of what is going on!”

Another commentator, @Abdul_A_Bello, simply urged, “Just tell us how much you are selling from your depot.”

Concerns regarding the lack of price transparency were echoed by @Abbaaudu, who remarked, “Dangote’s reluctance to publicly disclose the price of his petroleum products raises questions. If his refinery produces at a lower cost, why not transparently announce prices to attract local buyers and reduce imports?”

This scrutiny follows the recent lifting of Dangote Petrol on September 15, 2024, where the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited claimed it purchased fuel from the refinery at N898 per litre.

Dangote has refuted this claim without providing specific figures, adding to the uncertainty in the market.

As fuel prices fluctuate nationwide, with consumers facing rates between N1,025 and N1,300 per litre, calls for clarity and transparency from Dangote Refinery are intensifying.
