In a recent interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, Soyinka shared his belief that wine offers both relaxation and inspiration, saying, “A good, robust wine either sends you to sleep right away or inspires you to work.”

“Water just takes up space and you know it belongs to other commodities. So, I am not keen on water. I avoid water as much as possible,” he stated.

Soyinka also discussed his adaptation to technological advancements in writing, revealing that he no longer writes on paper except for “scraps of poetry.”

He emphasized the challenges of keeping up with constant technological change, quipping, “You don’t attempt to be up to date with everything. Because after a while, it gets too much.”

On the subject of inspiration, he noted, “I get my best ideas in isolation,” highlighting the importance of solitude, even during flights, for his creative process.
