Floods Wreak Havoc In Nigeria: 49 Dead, Thousands Displaced

1 min read

Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in northeast Nigeria, resulting in at least 49 deaths and displacing thousands of people.

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) reported that three states – Jigawa, Adamawa, and Taraba – have been severely affected.

“We are just entering into the peak of the season, particularly in the northern part of the country and the situation is very dire,” said Manzo Ezekiel, NEMA spokesperson.

The floods have destroyed farmlands, affecting around 693 hectares of agricultural land, which is a significant concern since Nigeria is already dealing with high food prices and double-digit inflation.

The government had warned that 31 out of 36 states were at risk of experiencing severe flooding. “We also have information about the high tide in the upper countries of the River Niger before Nigeria. All of these are flowing towards Nigeria. We are beginning to see a manifestation of our predictions,” Ezekiel added.
