Speaking at the Wilson and Yinka Badejo Memorial Lecture 2024 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos, Bakare highlighted the disconnect between politicians’ affluent lifestyles and the financial strain experienced by ordinary citizens.

During his keynote address on “Cultivating a Culture of Dialogue: Nurturing Understanding in a Culturally and Socially Diverse Nation,” Bakare called for leaders to engage in genuine dialogue rather than confrontation. He emphasized that true leadership involves empathy and transparency, suggesting that many Nigerian leaders have failed to demonstrate these qualities.

All parties must approach the dialogue table with open minds, effective communication, and empathy,” Bakare said. “An empathetic leader does not feed fat while asking the people to tighten their belts. Nigerian political leaders have mostly not demonstrated empathy. Otherwise, how do you live so large while your people are ravished in penury?”

He added, “Hunger knows no religion, tribe, or political party. The reaction to the #EndBadGovernance protests is a testament to the universal struggle against economic hardship.”
