French authorities have detained a woman in her fifties after the bodies of two newborn babies were discovered in a freezer at a residence in eastern France, according to sources close to the investigation.

The grim discovery was made following a police intervention at the home, sources told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday. Law enforcement officials subsequently took the woman into custody as part of an ongoing inquiry.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while forensic examinations are expected to establish key details, including the causes and timing. Officials have not yet released the
