Senator Orji Kalu has said that the National Assemblyโ€™s joint committee on the Electoral Act amendment will soon conclude its work on harmonising the proposed changes, signalling progress on one of the countryโ€™s most closely watched legislative efforts.

Speaking to journalists, Kalu expressed optimism that lawmakers would reach a consensus on the outstanding areas of the bill, noting that the committee was carefully reviewing key issues aimed at strengthening Nigeriaโ€™s electoral framework. He emphasised the importance of producing a unified version of the amendment that reflects the interests of both chambers.

ย

According to the senator, the harmonisation process is focusing on provisions considered critical to improving transparency, credibility, and efficiency in the conduct of elections. He explained that members of the committee are working to resolve differences between the Senate and House versions of the bill to ensure a coherent legal structure.

ย

Kalu, a former governor and prominent member of the National Assembly, stressed that the goal of the review is to enhance public confidence in the electoral system. He added that the committee is mindful of the expectations of Nigerians and the need for reforms that promote fairness and accountability.

ย

The lawmaker also reiterated the legislatureโ€™s commitment to delivering reforms that support democratic consolidation, describing the Electoral Act as a cornerstone of the nationโ€™s political process. He expressed confidence that the final outcome would contribute to more credible elections in future cycles.

Observers say the harmonisation of the Electoral Act amendments is a significant step in Nigeriaโ€™s ongoing efforts to refine its electoral laws, particularly as political stakeholders continue to advocate for improvements in election management and dispute resolution mechanisms.
